Latvian MP Encounters Government Pressure
Alexey Roslikov, who is currently under investigation for "inciting hatred" due to a speech he gave in parliament, was reportedly taken into custody briefly and then let go on Monday.
Earlier this month, Roslikov addressed the Saeima, where he accused national authorities of oppressing the country’s Russian-speaking minority, who constitute approximately one-quarter of Latvia's population.
He ended his statement using the Russian language and was subsequently removed from the chamber for breaking recently introduced regulations that require the exclusive use of Latvian in official parliamentary discourse.
Government officials initiated a legal inquiry against the MP, alleging that he was assisting an “aggressor state” [Russia] in opposition to Latvia’s interests.
According to reports from local news sources, the State Security Service (VDD) confirmed it carried out searches at various locations connected to Roslikov.
Colleagues from Roslikov’s political faction, For Stability!, reported that the legislator had been taken into custody.
In a video posted on social media, Roslikov revealed that he is currently prohibited from traveling abroad while the VDD's investigation remains ongoing.
He also claimed that authorities are targeting his family members to exert psychological influence.
